There are four cars, all of which do not have any dash lights on at the moment of this post. Guess which will be the first dash to run a Check Engine Light. Here are your contestants:
2004 Toyota Camry: 240,000 miles
2006 Kia Amanti: 102,000 miles
2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee: 55,000 miles
2012 Jaguar XF: 16,000 miles
All are driven at least once a week, but I’m not going to give away how many miles each does.
Give me the Model and the Month you believe that CEL will light up.
I’ll be honest, I’m writing this because it is a toss up between all four. Have fun!

The VW, tomorrow.
Er, the Kia, March 17th, 2016.

When you write the actual day it’s like seeing your own tombstone. I have never had such a chill go down my spine. Shit, this post is going to make me paranoid.

I’ll take the Jeep in March.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:02 |

Noted! I have my calendar out.

The Jeep
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:03 |

Is the Toyota a V6?
If not: the Jeep, December 12, 2016.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:03 |
|
The Jeep. No later than July.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:04 |

The Toyota is in fact the V6!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:04 |

I’m going Jeep in september.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:05 |

I’ll need a month so that I can mark you down.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:05 |

jaaaaaaag, on March 4
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:06 |

E: Damnit, didn’t understand the game.
I think the Jeep will go kaput on April 27th, 2016
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:06 |
|
I’ll need you to select a specific month in order for me to mark you down.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:06 |
|
Jeep. May.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:07 |
|
Ooh...that may change things. I'm still going with the Jeep in December, but the Camry is going to follow soon after, maybe by this time next year.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:07 |
|
Ok, put me down for June.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:07 |
|
Hmmm, Kia in June.
Bonus: the 11th of June.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:07 |
|
If you put a month on all four, I’ll mark yours down on separate calendar. It’s kind of like a slot machine that way!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:07 |
|
Toyota will go forever because 2004 Toyota.
Kia I would regard as shit, but as there’s very little to go wrong I don’t think it’ll light up anytime soon.
I was going to say Jag until I saw the year...
Leaving the Jeep. In july.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:08 |

Got it! But damnit people, stop specifying the day. It’s just too freaky!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:09 |

Got it down!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:09 |

Got it, but that would make me cry, which means it will make a great post...
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:10 |
|
Gotcha down!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:11 |

I’ll mark Jeep December and Camry February 2017. Could be fun when I post next year and remind you.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:11 |

Got it!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:13 |
|
Jeep for sure.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:14 |
|
Kia. Next January.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:14 |
|
Got it! You would be surprised by how much can go wrong in an Amanti and how difficult these cars are to work on. I have to take it to the dealer now. There is a guy who used to build them in the Middle East and he was the only tech that was able to figure out the EGR valve issue. They took the wrong parts of “luxury car” when they built them. Still love the damn thing though!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:14 |

XF, third week of March.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:16 |
|
There are no bonuses for my suffering! I’ll mark you down anyways though.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:16 |

Jeep: April 2016
Jag: June 2016
Kia: September 2018
Toyota: January 2025
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:16 |
|
Damn it! I got it.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:17 |
|
If you haven’t replaced cats in the ‘yota I’ll go against the grain and say it’ll go first in April P0420. However, if it’s got new cats and sensors, I’d say jeep in May.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:17 |
|
I say in late April :)
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:18 |
|
That would be precisely when I need to do an emissions check for the Kia. I think you’re on to something here!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:19 |
|
Give me a month and I’ll put your name into the drawing (no prizes currently).
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:19 |
|
Oh - forgot month: Jeep, March 2016.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:19 |

Got it down!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:20 |
|
done.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:20 |
|
Ha! I love it. I got them down.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:21 |
|
Lovely choice, I’ll reserve your spot!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:23 |
|
I say the Toyota and it'll be in August.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:23 |
|
Has the Camry had its catalytic converters change yet?
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:24 |
|
The Toyota has had nothing done to it. It’s been my mother’s since new and the last oil sticker I saw was from Walmart at 231,000 miles. She just did a $450 repair on it, but I can’t remember what it was though... I got you down though!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:25 |
|
Nope!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:25 |
|
Jeep.
August ‘16
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:25 |

Got it down!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:26 |
|
Oh, a month before I need to do an emissions check for September registration. Great choice!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:28 |
|
Camry will have the light in October for a P0420/430(Somewhere around 250k, I don’t know how much each one gets driven).
Amanti I give until July.
Jeep you should probably check pending because one’s about to be on.
If the Jags is not on, the bulb burned out from being on and you should change it.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:31 |
|
2006 Kia Amanti: 102,000 miles
Apr 2016
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:32 |
|
Thank you for these! True story, I paid for my CEL bulb to be replaced in my Kia Rio. I knew something was wrong because it wasn’t on and I was still a year out from having to renew my registration.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:32 |
|
Got it down!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:35 |

I’m going with the 2007 CVPI you don’t own yet... in November.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:40 |
|
Gah, I wish I knew what these cars were getting mileage-wise here...
The Jeep is very sketchy and getting driven a lot. Probably the sketchiest of the lot, but you have worse risks here. You’ve got a Kia from the dark days and a Toyota that is likely to have a catastrophic engine failure within the next 20-40k miles...
Amanti, 2016/06
(...and I just found out I can put one for each car)
Camry, 2016/09
Jeep, 2016/11
XF, 2017/07
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:41 |
|
Kia in August
It’ll probably be air conditioning related and hot as hell outside lol
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:42 |
|
I was initially thinking September but thought that might be a little far awaw
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:46 |
|
My ‘98 LS400 has 292k and the CEL comes on intermittently for a Po430 that we just end up resetting and say we’ll fix it later. Also has your Camry had the Water Pump replaced?
![]() 02/22/2016 at 16:59 |
|
Nah, The mileage would have everyone focus towards the wrong vehicle. I think all your time frames are pretty good though!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:00 |
|
Ha! Got it down.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:00 |
|
“Thought it would be a little away.” Ouch!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:02 |
|
Jeep in May. The Jag may already have thrown a CEL but the bulb may be burnt out.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:03 |
|
Nothing at all engine related. My mom did the master cylinder last year and something this year. She is said she has put in more than what the vehicle is worth...which I guess is $700 bucks in 12 years. I give Toyota all the credit in the world when it comes to drive trains. Paint and interior components, not so much.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:03 |
|
You read my mind.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:04 |
|
I know, they need to start making an indicator for the CEL bulb being out!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:06 |
|
2004 Toyota Camry: November 2016
2006 Kia Amanti: May 2016
2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee: October 2016
2012 Jaguar XF: February 2017
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:07 |
|
Got them down!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:13 |
|
Thanks. I was going to go with the Jag in 2018 since i noticed the extended warranty was purchased, then I remembered Doug’s luck with British cars and warranties. I should have gone sooner with the Camry, as I don’t think it has had the timing belt replaced, but maybe failure on that won’t throw a CEL.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:32 |
|
My moms ‘05 needed a a water pump at 100k. It needs a bunch of wron out component work right now though because the “Cobblers kids don’t have any shoes”, the shop owners wife and kids don’t always get there stuff fixed right away.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:34 |
|
We said the exact same thing. Except I said the P0420 or P0430. Those things can only go so many miles, doesn’t matter who makes them.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 17:56 |
|
I haven’t heard that saying in years!
![]() 02/22/2016 at 18:23 |
|
Had to look that one up! I’ve only ever owned single bank systems so I’m real familiar with P0420.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 18:31 |
|
The Camry probably only have one bank now that I think of it. I have a ‘98 LS400 and it has two banks. 420 is bank 1, 430 is bank 2
![]() 02/22/2016 at 18:33 |
|
2004 Camry: January 2017
2006 Kia Amanti: January 2017
2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee: January 2017
2012 Jaguar XF: January 2017
You’re gonna have a bad start to next year.
And it will all be Donald Trump’s fault.

What I love about my car...
I can do the equivalent of burying my head in the sand when I get a trouble code.

2004 Toyota Camry: 240,000 miles - June 2016

Would that be the CCELL? The Check Check Engine Light Light?
